Podcasts are really fun and informative but finding new ones that actually fit your tastes is quite a hustle. This is why Spotify acquired Podz, a startup that appears to have solved this problem.
Podcasts are usually more than 30 minutes long and this makes browsing for new shows difficult. Many listeners just won’t take that long to test a show and see if they like it. It’s not like listening to a new song by your favorite artist.
Podz developed what it called a “first audio newsfeed” which are essentially 60 second clips. The idea was borrowed from Headliner, an app used by podcasters to create such clips when promoting their shows on social media.
However, Podz used machine learning trained on over 100,000 hours of audio to generate these clips.
Speaking to techcrunch Spotify said “We believe that Podz’ technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate growth of the category worldwide.”
The acquisition signifies Spotify’s ambitions to become an industry leader in audio entertainment. Just the other day Spofity debuted Greenroom, their answer to the growing dominance of Clubhouse.
